Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit the doctor—and one of the top reasons patients come to Evermore Chiropractic. The truth is, many of us are unintentionally making our back pain worse through small daily habits. The good news? With a few adjustments (pun intended), you can protect your spine and feel better day to day.

1. Sitting Too Much

Modern life has us glued to chairs—from desks to couches to car seats. Prolonged sitting places stress on the lower back and weakens core muscles that support the spine.

Fix it: Set a reminder to stand up every 30–60 minutes. Even a short walk or some light stretching can help reduce pressure on your spine.

📚 Research published in the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation shows that prolonged sitting is strongly linked with increased risk of lower back pain.

2. Poor Posture

Slouching or “tech neck” from looking down at phones and laptops strains both the upper and lower back. Over time, it can lead to misalignments and chronic discomfort.

Fix it: Keep screens at eye level, roll your shoulders back, and think about keeping your ears stacked over your shoulders.

3. Lifting Incorrectly

We’ve all done it—bending from the waist to pick up something heavy or twisting while carrying groceries. These movements put sudden, uneven stress on spinal discs.

Fix it: Always bend at the knees, keep the object close to your body, and use your legs (not your back) to lift.

4. Skipping Exercise

A weak core = a weak back. Without strong muscles to stabilize your spine, everyday activities like bending or standing for long periods become harder on your body.

Fix it: Add in low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga. Core-strengthening movements (think planks, bridges, or Pilates) are especially helpful for protecting the spine.

📚 According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, people who regularly engage in physical activity report significantly less back pain than those who are sedentary.

5. Sleeping on the Wrong Mattress or Pillow

Your spine should rest in a neutral position while you sleep. Too-soft mattresses or unsupportive pillows can cause misalignment that leads to morning stiffness and pain.

Fix it: Choose a medium-firm mattress and a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck. Side sleepers should consider placing a pillow between their knees to reduce hip and back strain.

When to See a Chiropractor

While these small changes can make a big difference, sometimes back pain is a sign of something deeper. Chiropractic care addresses spinal misalignments that simple lifestyle adjustments alone can’t fix. At Evermore Chiropractic, Dr. Frank Rizzuto uses precise adjustments to restore motion, reduce pressure on nerves, and support your body’s natural healing process.

Back pain doesn’t have to hold you back. If these habits sound familiar—or if you’re already feeling the aches—schedule your visit at Evermore Chiropractic in Boynton Beach today.
